Margarita anyone?!

Especially after the silly season, we can often feel like we reallyyyy pushed the boat out with our food and alcohol consumption.

So i’m here to share some practical ideas about how we can bring our silly season drinking habits back down to earth...

Social/binge drinking is a very common behaviour amongst our community. If you think about it, most of our social events revolve around food and alcohol. I get it - it’s fun to go out with your friends on the weekend, graze on a cheese board and drink wine. But is it the reason you are not getting the results you want?

If you are eating mindfully and smashing all your workouts during the week but go out to dinner on Friday, party all night Saturday, and have casual BBQ drinks on Sunday – alcohol (and the extra food you eat in this time) could likely be the reason you are not getting results. By blowing out our daily calories on the weekend we increase our total calorie intake for the week. Overall this means we are in less of a calorie deficit leading to minimal/no weight loss.

I am definitely not saying to give up socialising all together, it is a major part of our culture and we deserve to have balance in our lives. So here are a few tricks and strategies to use when you go out to limit the impact a social event will have on your results:

1. Drink non-alcoholic drinks in a wine glass i.e. kombucha, ginger beer, soda and lime, sugar free mixers. For people that drink out of habit this one works wonders.

2. Drink in smaller glasses – pour smaller portions i.e. half glasses of wine.

3. Dilute with soda water/diet tonic – pour half the amount of alcohol you normally would and make up the rest of the glass with soda/diet tonic.

4. Go for the lower carb options i.e. low carb beer/cider, wine, spirits with diet mixers. Limit the cocktails – they are packed with calories. Or make a diet version yourself.

5. Alternate drinks – one alcoholic followed by one water/diet drink. Stay hydrated!

6. Get back on track the day after – get back into your normal food routine and maybe enjoy a long walk to sweat some of the alcohol out of your system and keep your body moving.

7. BONUS- checkout ‘SANS DRINKS’ – they have hundreds of non-alcoholic wines/beer/cider/champagne/spirits that taste just like normal alcohol.
